The Apostle Islands is a great winter destination and would be a great get-a-way that is out of the ordinary. Of course the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore does offer the typical winter snowshoeing, cross country skiing, winter camping, hiking, fishing, but get this... across the ice exploration of the islands and the famous sea caves!
The Apostle Islands were made famous in part by the great sandstone formations and caves that dot the lake-shores and islands. Not only are these beautiful in the summer, but even more so in the winter.
Anyone who is willing to be smart and brave the ice can visit frozen waterfalls, caves of icicles, and probably some of the best winter splendor in the Midwest and probably the lower 48.
One of the best locations for ice caves and formations around the Apostle Islands is the Bayfield area, hiking from the Meyers Beach area to the Bayfield peninsula.
Don’t be fooled though, not only do all the caves hold awesome ice formations, but the splashing sea spray and running water make the coast line and cliffs something to behold. Don’t forget to pack your snowshoes and some warm cloths!
So, you think ice caves are cool, well there is another winter Apostle Islands activity that is pretty off the charts as well. Dog sledding. That’s right. Did you ever think you could go dog sledding and see the Annual Apostle Islands Dog Sledding Race held on Saturday, February 4th and 5th, 2012?
I would be willing to bet the vast majority of you reading this article have never been dog sledding, but think that it sounds kind of cool!
Looking to head somewhere awesome for the winter? Try the Apostle Islands to experience some dog sledding, snowshoeing, or awesome ice caves and formations.
