Holy Smokes! Biking Around the World??

by Daniel Beach

There are a lot of adventures and adventurers out there today doing this and that. But, when is the last time you talked to someone who wanted to ride their bike around the world? Yeah, that's what I thought, me either. Dreaming big is something that we all do, but Sean Conway had a little bit bigger dream then most of us. Riding his bicycle around the world, and do it so fast he sets a world record.

Sean Conway grew up in Africa, on the Zambezi river, not your average upbringing that is for sure! Ever since the record for fastest time to cycle around the world was set by Mark Beaumont , there has been a rush to go faster. There are multiple people cycling at the same time, all of them racing towards the one goal, riding their bike around the world in the quickest time.

Of course there is a lot of logistics and planning that goes into riding your bike around the world, and trying to do it in the quickest time! Think about how important the route is, food, lodging etc. To beat the current record Sean will have to ride his bike for 162 days, at 112 miles per day. Wow! Do you know how many miles that is? 18,000.

Sean has commented that he plans for lodging every night is well...fly by night. He will be taking a tent with him and stopping when and wherever he needs to. Also his attack will be solo, no support team riding along in a truck to help out. Also he has said that the route planning, as expected, appears to be the most challenging and hardest part of this attempt so far. Wondering what the route will be? You can see the map here.

We put together some questions for Sean Conway to answer. It's always fun to dig inside the mind of a great adventurer, we never pass up a chance!

1. Why do you think having some adventure in life is important?
Adventure is, in its purest form, simply a way of thinking. You don’t have to row oceans or climb mountains. I think it’s important for us to constantly challenge ourselves and ask questions like: What is out there? What is humanly possible. It keeps our minds alive so that we are not just existing – we are living!

2. Do you have a favorite adventure or outdoor activity? What do you like about it?
I love all sorts of outdoor activity namely climbing, canoeing and hiking but I would have to say cycling is my favourite. There are so many forms of cycling that might take your fancy as well as being the most efficient way of getting around. You can really cover a lot of distance on a bike which allows for a great way to take in the world. There is no better feeling than reaching the top of a huge climb, your heart bouncing off the handlebars, exhausted, knowing that you have a good 15 minutes to freewheel down again taking in the world as is passes you by.

3. How do you keep yourself going when the going gets tough?
Motivation can sometimes be really hard especially when it’s -5 Celsius with a 40mph wind in your face. It’s times like these when I remember a quote from Mohamed Ali - 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion' I am also quite lucky that I have the memory of a goldfish which really helps me forget the bad times pretty quickly.

4. Is their a piece of gear that you can’t live without?
I am not much of a gadget man but I do live my entire life through my iPhone. It has my maps, my GPS, my music to keep me sane and it is my connection with my family as I go around the world. It important for me to share my experiences so that others can hopefully learn from my mistakes and succeed in their own life challenges. That and Vaseline!

5. What’s your next big adventure?
I have another world record that I am going to attempt at the end of the year. Its cycling based and although a lot shorter, will be a lot more adventurous. Watch this space. After that I am going to swim the English Channel. I have always wanted to do that.

It will be interesting to keep up with Sean as he attempts to cycle around the world! I can only imagine that obstacles and adventures he will face on this enormous journey. Best of luck!
