BD athletes Adam Pustelnik and Nico Favresse make first repeat of Orbayu (8b+/8c) in Naranjo de Bulnes, Spain from Black Diamond Equipment on Vimeo.
Better yet, Nicolas was kind enough to answer a few questions we posed to him about adventure. Ever wondered how a real passionate person who as accomplished so much in their outdoor field thinks? Let’s pull up a chair and figure out what makes someone like this tick!
1. Why do you think having some adventure in life is important?
Personally It helps me having some perspective in my life and better understand where my values are. We live these days in such a superficial world that it's easy to be trapped by materialism and the idea that having more means being happier.
2. Do you have a favorite adventure or outdoor activity? What do you like about it?
Last summer I was sailing and climbing big walls in some very remote area on the west coast of Greenland. This was probably one of my most complete adventure because it combined so many different challenges. We explored many fjords sailing through icebergs and found some amazing virgin big walls that were raising straight out of the ocean. In order to climb the walls we had to tie the boat to the wall and start climb right off the boat's deck. Also we had to overcome the birds that were protecting their place. After 2 months of exploring and climbing, we sailled across a very stormy atlantic Ocean with a 10 meter sailboat and as a Capitain a 75 year old scotish priest. This 15 days passage was probably in the end the most difficult part of the expedition. I guess what I like is to be confronted to the elements and have them as pure and raw as they can be so that I see the earth just like when human didn't exist.
3. How do you keep yourself going when the going gets tough?
Usually I think it's the unkown, the excitment of exploring and not knowing what's next.
4. Is their a piece of gear that you can’t live without?
A string musical instrument
5. What’s your next big adventure?
This winter I am going to Venezuella to explore some big walls in the Tapui region. We are looking forward to some long approaches in the jungle where we have to build our own trail with machete and avoid being bit by snakes or spiders. Once we will overcome the approach some amazing virgin walls should be waiting to be tempted.
Hope you enjoyed this look into the mind of a great rock climber and adventurer! If you want to learn more about Nicolas Favresse head over to his website and check it out.
